Opportunities for doing Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation
There are exciting opportunities for doing your Ph. D. at the Centre for
Wildlife Studies in the field of wildlife ecology and conservation. The
degree will be granted by Manipal Academy of Higher Education. We are
looking for highly motivated and academically driven candidates, with
demonstrated interest in field-based research in wildlife ecology and
conservation in India and Asia.
The following are some of the projects for which we have opportunities for
you:
1.
Understanding human–wildlife interactions across India with interests in
particular species (leopards, tigers, bears, elephants etc), mitigation and
compensation.
2.
Evaluating conservation technology interventions in addressing
human-wildlife interactions.
3.
Modeling amphibian and bird diversity in human-modified landscapes in
the Western Ghats.
4.
Assessing conservation-education programs and tools
5.
Understanding the role of women in conservation
6.
Understanding zoonotic disease transmissions
7.
Evaluation of tourism opportunities and challenges across Indian
protected areas
8.
Understanding illegal wildlife trade across ecological, political
socio-cultural and economic contexts
9.
Connectivity modeling and spatial conservation prioritization of large
mammals, using current methodological approaches for empirical data
collection and analyses.
In addition to the positions available in different projects, those with
CSIR/UGC/DST doctoral fellowships are encouraged to apply provided their
interests match that of a Guide in CWS. Typically, most projects are
executed in collaboration with faculty from other international
universities and national institutions in India.
Essential qualifications
Indian national /or OCI, with a postgraduate degree in natural sciences,
social sciences, medical sciences or engineering with at least 60% marks or
equivalent, and 12 months of experience in field-based wildlife research.
Desirable qualifications
Additional experience and training in the field of wildlife biology;
Demonstrated ability to write proposals and reports; Publication of
scientific and popular articles; Knowledge of survey and analytical methods
in ecology; Working knowledge of software such as QGIS/ArcGIS and R.
