Dear Yeti members,
We would like to introduce *PATHANGA SUCHAKA* (www.pathangasuchaka.in),
*An AI based Indian Butterflies and Moths identification website and
android app* for the use of field biologists and enthusiasts.
*Who can access:* Anybody with simple web browser in their computer or
mobile phone can access the service
*Platforms available: *Web and android app
*Paid or free:* FREE
*How to use the service:* Register and login to the website or app to get
access to the service
*How to identify the butterflies or moths: 1. *Just click the image of the
butterfly or moth, *2.* login into the website, submit the image (crop if
necessary by clicking crop button, drag the area to be cropped), *3*. enter
the date & location of capture and submit.
*How much time required to identify:* It takes just 3 seconds to get it
identified.
*How many species of moths and butterflies can be identified: *1011
Butterflies and 1111 Moths of India can be identified
*Can I identify any stage of lepidoptera:* No. Only adult moth or butterfly
can be identified (no eggs, larva, pupa)
*How to see the result: *Results will be shown in percentage to the best
match of the trained species
*How to analyse the result: *The AI system gives out 1 or 2 or 3 best
matches for the image submitted with varied confidence percentage upon
which user can take decision
*How to see the list of species available for identification: *Visit
species page to check the list of species that the system can identify
*How to check the distribution of species: *Visit Distribution section in
the website to see the distribution of the species based on crowd sourced
*Where is located:* The service is developed and hosted at School of
Ecology and Conservation, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK,
Bangalore.
*How to contact for feedback: *Please visit the feedback section under the
Contact tab in the website
*How to be in touch:* Follow us on Facebook-Pathangasuchaka page for
regular updates and refer to the contact section for more information.
*Tip: How to analyse the result*
*Result with 1 identified species:* If your result has only 1 result then
the system is very sure about the identification and you can go ahead
*Result with 2 or 3 identified species:* Based on the percentage confidence
you can choose the result. If the result has too wide (ex: 50% & 10%)
confidence percentage then you can choose the first one, if it's very close
(ex: 49% & 45%) then you need to compare and verify among the two or three
based on the result. If the confidence percentage is very low (20% or less)
then the species is not in the training list.
*Note: *
1. The system is trained to identify the species based on how a species is
seen in the field. If the butterfly or a moth is always seen spreading
wings then an underside image might result in poor identification
percentage.
2. Similarly, the close/macro image focusing part of a specimen might not
be identified well.
3. Too close or too far image may not be a good image for identification
4. Group of butterflies may affect the result, cropping is preferred on the
butterly of your interest.
