Dear all,
As a wildlifer you must have seen the Giant Wood Spider (Nephila pilipes)
(also called as Golden Orb Weaver) in the field. The Giant Wood Spider is
one of the largest known orb web weaving spiders in the world. It typically
dwells in woodland forests but also occasionally found in public gardens
and green campuses. The silk thread of this species is one of the strongest
natural fibers in the world, claimed for having stronger tensile strength
than steel. It’s presence is very unlikely to go unnoticed, as one just
can’t ignore such a big spider in a giant web built between the trees.
I am currently studying the natural history of this fascinating species and
need your contribution in better understanding its distribution.
• All you have to do is to recall when and where you saw the Giant Wood
Spider during your excursions.
• There are 5 identical forms given in the Google form attached below
• Location of your sighting and the month of your sighting is the most
important information I am seeking from you and hence these are mandatory
to be filled.
• You can dig into your photographs and get the date of sighting from the
.jpg files.
• Apart from your records of the presences of this species, if you have
noticed any absences in certain months of the year for the respective
location, please write it in the comments sections at the end of the form.
