Dear Colleagues,
Please forgive the general email which does mean that the purpose of the
email will unfortunately not be applicable to everyone. Apologies if this
is the case, but the Fund does hope to spread the word about the new,
temporary funding initiative.
You have all previously received grants from the MBZ Fund, which have
generally focused on hands on work, helping to conserve threatened species
in situ. Based on a survey the Fund conducted in April 2020 in order to
assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on species conservation, one of
the main problems identified was the drop in funding, threatening the
ability of species conservation organisations to remain viable and to pay
staff. The Fund believes this is an inherent threat to species conservation
itself and so will temporarily provide grants to support the core costs of
local, hands on, grassroots conservation NGOs to help them to continue
functioning and keep staff. Whilst this difficult situation will probably
continue through 2021, this initiative will hopefully at least help some of
the most vulnerable and crucial organisations for a few months.
This focus on core operation costs will be for the next two rounds of grant
giving, so with the application deadlines (which are unchanged from the
usual) of 31st October, 2020 and 28th February, 2021. From 1st March
onwards the Fund's grant giving will return to usual.
