BNHS is looking for highly motivated, energetic, and enthusiastic
individuals for a project towards “Addressing the taxonomic and
geographical shortfall for amphibians and reptiles using specimen data from
the collection of Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai, India”.
The BNHS museum is one of the finest natural history collections in Asia
having more than 1,35,000 faunal specimens collected from across the Indian
Subcontinent over a period of 135 years. Through this project, we aim to
address the gap in taxonomy and distribution of Indian reptiles and
amphibians using specimens and associated metadata at BNHS and digitize
this information to make it readily available for conservation assessments,
policy makers and stake holders. The main objective of this project is to
resolve taxonomic ambiguities of Indian reptiles and amphibians and
understand their distributional ranges by extracting morphological,
geographic and ecological information associated with the specimens from
the BNHS collection.
This project is a great opportunity for students and early career
researchers who want to have experience in the field of herpetology and
systematics. It can act as a stepping stone for students who want to take
up further studies on diversification of lesser fauna, evolution,
biogeography and also, provide them with an opportunity to collaborate with
other researchers for publications based on the results.
*Qualifications/Experience:*
Students who have at least completed Graduation (B. Sc./ M.Sc.) in
disciplines of wildlife sciences/ life sciences/ environment/ zoology/
ecology or a related subject with a keen interest and basic experience in
herpetological studies, handling specimens and conducting morphological
studies. Preference will be given to M.Sc. Life sciences (Botany, Zoology,
Wildlife Biology, Environment Science, Forestry, etc) students. Those who
are currently in their 1st year and looking for their thesis project with a
keen interest in the above the study can also apply. Students from other
disciplines but with commitment and experience in studying reptile and
amphibian specimens can also be considered.
We are looking for hardworking, reliable, and committed individuals with a
willingness to work with and handle preserved specimens; work independently
within the team and learn from others; self-motivated, patient, and able to
work with minimal supervision.
Successful applicant’s responsibilities will include: 1) Collecting data on
morphology and morphometry to identify species of reptiles and amphibians
in the museum; 2) Specimen photography and cataloging; 3) Data entry from
registers into excel files; 4) Georeferencing collection localities and
creating distribution maps; 5) Assisting/ writing research papers, project
reports.
