About *CURE*
Centre for Urban Water Resources (CURE) from DHAN Vayalagam (Tank)
Foundation, the water thematic collective of DHAN Foundation with sectoral
focus on water management in urban and semi-urban environments, was
inaugurated in 2008. Its main objectives are to protect the urban aquatic
environment, to enhance the living conditions of residents with regard to
health and hygiene, and to improve livelihoods by securing water resources.
CURE has restored an urban tank in Madurai which was not active for past
four years. The project REVIVAL, is the new initiative of CURE in
Collaboration with HCL Foundation.
The project *REVIVAL*
The project REVIVAL, Revitalizing Vandiyur Lake is focusing on restoring
the tank system by redefining the purpose of it for the future through
collective planning and action. Vandiyur tank, the biggest tank of Madurai
city, once irrigated more than 640 acres has lost its purpose and
continuously subjected to predation. Two major components of the project
are redesigning Vandiyur tank based on purpose and bringing safe water to
the tank system. This project would be a model on ‘Water security’ of the
groundwater based urban communities through revitalizing traditional
surface water bodies.
Call for *INTERNS AND FELLOWS:*
*Internships: *Interns from various departments will be engaged for
three-six months in micro-studies associated with the revitalizing the
tank. Their findings will serve as a base for preparing comprehensive DPR.
A proper research methodology will be provided for the study. A mentor will
be associated with the interns for better results. Best interns will be
awarded.
*Fellowships: *This one-year full-time fellowship provides a framework for
best minds to join hands with urban communities, empathize with their
water-related
struggles, connect with their aspirations and co-create the envisaged
future. The fellows will pilot some of the scalable elements of the
project. The fellows will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 15,000* (*Conditions
apply).

THEMES
- *Building Social Responsibilities:* Building ownership among the
communities through the formation of Tank associations and strengthening
it. Bringing insights of multiple stakeholders on Revival of Vandiyur Tank
system and bringing concise on design and implementations are the key
objectives. background of social studies, social work, arts and science
are most welcome.
- *Waste Management:* Studying current system of solid waste and
wastewater management in Vandiyur Tank Cascade system, developing a
sustainable model based on multi-stakeholder approach, Nature-based
solution for sewage fed tanks and piloting the same are the key
objectives. Graduates
with the background of Environment engineering, environmental science and
innovation engineering are most welcome
- *Stormwater Management:* a Spatio-temporal analysis of the stormwater
response of Vandiyur Tank Cascade system, GIS-based Flood Mapping, building
GIS based tank cascade database and monitoring system, developing
hydrological model for Vandiyur Tank are the objectives. Graduates with
the background of Water resources engineering, Hydrology, Hydrogeology,
Remote Sensing and GIS, Integrated Watershed Management are most welcome.
- *Redesigning Landscape: *Redesigning Vandiyur Tank Cascade by
redefined functionality for providing maximum services for the urban
ecosystem, developing it along with community perspectives, technical
feasibility and cost-effective design are the objectives. Graduates with
the background of Architecture and Landscape design and engineering are
most welcome.
- *Documentation and Social Media: *Bringing out newsletters, making
documentary films on issues, short films on pilots and a behavioural
mechanism to be adopted, posters and connecting with social media are the
key objectives. Graduates with the background of Visual media, Mass
communication, English, Tamil and fine arts are most welcomed.
*Graduates or professionals from another background who are interested in
the above themes are also welcome.
SELECTION PROCESS
- The candidates shortlisted in the first stage will be notified on an
on-going basis during the application period. In the next stage, screened
applicants will be interviewed. The successful candidates will be notified
post interview.
- The successful applicant will be required to sign a standard reporting
and completion agreement and liability waiver. The applicants are
encouraged to publish their findings in Journals.
EXPECTATIONS OF THE INTERN AND THE FELLOW
- Be highly self-motivated to pilot the research findings, working in
grassroots, action research with urban communities
- Have critical logical reasoning skills
- Dispense assigned duties punctually
- Be eager to learn and acquire new skills, both empirical and
theoretical.
