Hi,
Over the next three years, The Gerry Martin Project will be focusing on
human-snake conflict mitigation and management in the Mysore District. With
our base near the town of Hunsur, we are ideally situated to take on this
mammoth task.
We are tackling this issue at numerous levels in one district so as to
develop a model that can be replicated in other locations. Our work
involves, ecological, socio-economic and epidemiological research,
educational outreach, effecting practices, training Forest Department,
rescuers and medical personnel, public awareness and community-level
interventions.
This scale and quantum of work requires more hands on deck and we are
welcoming skilled and dedicated volunteers to join in our efforts.
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?
To volunteer, you need to be above 18 years old, Indian and preferably,
(but, not imperatively) able to speak Kannada fluently.
You need to have a drivers’ license and be able to ride a scooter or
motorbike.
We welcome:
1. Educational skills- outreach, public speaking, etc.
2. Scientific backgrounds- ideally ecology, biology, etc. But, there is
also a lot of survey-based work with the community.
3. Experience working with children
4. Art and design skills
5. Agricultural skills/ expertise
6. Writers
HOW LONG DO I NEED TO VOLUNTEER FOR?
We require all volunteers to commit a minimum of fifteen consecutive days
initially and can come by for varying periods after the first period if
they choose to.
WHAT WILL THE WORK CONSIST OF?
Volunteers will be required to assist in our fieldwork, collecting data
along with TGMP members. There will be a combination of field research,
door-to-door surveys, animal care and a host of other research and
conservation based activities.
There will also be a fair amount of maintenance work at the base. Everyone
pitches in to keep things going here. This will include gardening and
landscape (food for us and our animals and habitat creation), carpentry,
etc.
Basically, everyone shares all the work that is required to keep the base
running and achieving its goals.
WHAT ABOUT FOOD & ACCOMMODATION?
Accommodation will be provided in the form of a wooden cabin with a
separate toilet and bathroom block. Food is served at a common dining area.
The cost for food and accommodation is Rs. 1,000/- per head per day plus
GST.
