the handloom and handicrafts industry.

Please do join in and share within your network

*BHOOMI 'WEAVE'INAR, **From Customer to Custodian *

*October 3rd, 4-6pm*

*Zoom Meeting ID:380 750 1044, **Passcode: 16520*

Covid 19 has affected many industries severely and one of them is the
Handloom Khadi industry. While the industry was predominantly marketing
through brick and mortar shops, the lockdown closed off much of their sales
and footfalls did not recover much post lifting. At the same time many
collectives kept paying the artisans for their work despite zero sales
which has led to an accumulation of massive stocks of tailored and
untailored cloth and other articles.

What we need today is not just us to be conscious consumers but to be
community custodians of the handloom industry and the people whose
livelihoods have been deeply affected. Bhoomi has formed a Handloom Support
Group that will create awareness and come up with decentralized
alternatives to facilitate smoother sale and distribution of handloom
products.

*The group is organizing a 'weave'inar on the 3rd of October to look at the
different actions that can be taken up by us, both online and offline.
Ananthoo of Tula India and Latha Tummuru of Dastkar Andhra will be setting
the context for how the lives of people in the handloom industry has been
severely impacted and how we as individuals can take responsibility for
protecting this industry. *

There are four areas that you can contribute as a 'sevak':

1) *Digital Marketing*
Support some of the groups to redesign their websites and help in
increasing their digital footprint.

2) *Awareness Campaigns*
Create posters on awareness in regional, national and political context to
give exposure to the handloom industry.

3) *Decentralised Sale & Distribution*
Form direct market linkages for textile with the industry.

4) *Design and Value Addition*

Most of the handloom garments (especially the organic handloom) are simple
in style. This team will look at making more utilitarian products (such as
home furnishing) with the fabric.
