*Mangroves are nature’s coastal guards, ensuring the nutrient cycle of the
sea while maintaining coastlines by reducing land erosion. They are great
carbon sinks, isolating carbon at a rate two to four times of tropical
forests.*
*Mumbai is surrounded by over 5000 acres of mangrove swamps spread over
various areas like Mahim, Madh, Thane creek, Versova, Gorai and Ghodbunder.*

*Mangroves are also one of the world's most threatened ecosystems. **More
than one-third of the world's mangrove forests have disappeared in the past
5 decades. In India, this percentage goes up to 40 – 50%. Closer home,
Mumbai has lost nearly 40% of its natural mangroves in just a decade (1991
- 2001).*

The local fisherfolk communities like the *Koli, Aagri, Bhandari, Tamboli,
Karhadi *whose livelihoods depend on these ecosystems are extremely anxious
about their future.

*Why aren't we more worried?*

A 2019 *Climate Central study states
<https://www.climatecentral.org/news/report-flooded-future-global-vulnerability-to-sea-level-rise-worse-than-previously-understood>
by
2050*, coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Surat, and Kolkata will be
either underwater or ravaged by recurring floods, as sea levels across the
world will continue to rise with increasing carbon emissions.

Urban development projects such as the Thane-Navi Mumbai airport, Yogayatan
Ports, Nhava Sheva-Sewri coastal bridge and the Maha Mumbai, deliberately
ignore the negative impact
<http://gbgb.in/docs/articles/Environmental%20Problems%20of%20Mumbai.pdf> on
the mangroves as well as those local communities whose life is dependent
<https://thewire.in/rights/watch-how-the-struggling-fishing-community-has-been-pushed-over-the-edge-in-this-pandemic>
upon
the mangroves. Urban residents, who live near these sites of ecological
warfare, most times have no clue about what's happening in their
neighbourhood. This film aims to change that, through the voices of native
residents or the *mulnivashi*, the only ones who know the way forward.

We are a team of independent individuals and urban residents ourselves, who
through interaction with these local communities are trying to
understand the severity of the problem, and what this means for everybody
who calls this city their home. We wish to spread this awareness through
the documentary and an interactive website.

We cannot do this alone, and will need the support and participation of
more and more people to save our beloved city.

We *require funds for research, production and post-production *to complete
this documentary film and interactive website. Interested individuals or
