*Background*
The Central Asian Flyway (CAF) is one of nine major flyways world-wide.
This migration super-highway spans over 30 countries and is used by over
300 species of migratory bird (defined as those that cross at least one
international border). The CAF connects the breeding grounds as far north
as the Siberian Arctic, including the countries of Central Asia, to
non-breeding grounds in the tropics of India, Sri Lanka and Arabian
Peninsula. Although the shortest, it crosses over the highest mountain
range in the world, the Himalayas. It also includes the world’s most
densely populated countries, each of them facing many different
developmental challenges.
To advance conservation of migratory birds in the CAF, BirdLife
International is to produce a concise Situation Analysis Report that serves
as a generally accepted baseline for priority setting of migratory bird
conservation actions in the (CMS-defined) geography of the Central Asian
Flyway and places these priorities in the context of the wider development
agenda for the region. The Situation Analysis will support the planning and
work of the CMS CAF Secretariat and will be one of 5 outputs that will
presented to the CMS Conference of Parties at CMS COP 14 in May 2023.
On the basis of a literature review and consultation with national and
international experts conducted during May to October 2022, the
conservation status of migratory birds of the CAF will be summarized, the
most important existing and emerging threats and opportunities affecting
them will be identified and their impacts reviewed. Particular emphasis
will be given to the development context within which these priorities will
need to be addressed, particularly the pressing need for urgent action to
mitigate and adapt to climate change. Governments and other key
stakeholders are invited to join in information collection and review to
ensure maximal alignment with ongoing policy, planning and conservation
initiatives and identify existing institutional resources at national and
international levels, and especially with the development of a programme of
work for the CMS CAF secretariat and institutional framework.
Key stakeholders from government, research institutes and nature
conservation organisations will be invited to contribute to the Situation
Analysis Report.
To facilitate the collection of information three (3) Project Assistants
will be involved in the project, together covering the main languages
(English, Russian and Arabic) in the Central Asian Flyway. The Project
Assistants will be involved to support the team to collate basis
information, support national consultations and collation of the report.
The key responsibilities include:
1. Collation of migratory bird species list
2. Support identification of sources of information on migratory birds
and their habitats (e.g. literature, datasets, organisations and experts).
3. Provide input to preparation of a standard questionnaire and
translation into national language if required.
4. Support national consultation process with key national
stakeholders (agencies, research organisations, NGOs and experts) based on
the standard questionnaire and compiling of a database of important sites,
knowledge gaps, and priorities. The project assistants play a leading role
in the national consultation in countries with no BirdLife partner.
Consultation may through online interviews.
5. Support collation of national reports and supporting tables into a
regional assessment.
6. Liaising with the International Consultant and BirdLife Global
Flyways Programme Coordinator to ensure consultation and preparation of the
report are implemented in a timely manner.

Qualifications for Project Assistants:
- MSc in nature conservation or related field
- Excellent in writing, reading and speaking in English
- Thorough understanding of bird migration and conservation of
migratory birds
- Experience with collecting information from different sources,
including literature and experts
- Experience with data analysis and reporting
- Organised and capable to deliver on time
