Hi editors,
I’m working on acquisitions for an upcoming collection of short fiction. It’s a
relatively small print run, which will be mostly distributed in Canada, but a
few copies will make their way to the states.
One of the selections is a chapter from a fairly well-known novel. I’ve secured
permission to reprint from the Canadian publisher (Penguin Random House), and
they directed me to Counter Point Press for US distribution rights.
However, some folks are distinguishing between publishing and distributing –
"If you are publishing in the US then you will need to pay for permission from
the US publisher. If you are only publishing in Canada, you will not need
permission from the US."
Does anybody have experience or knowledge to confirm one way or the other? As
one editor put it, distribution appears to be a flexible concept. Needless to
say, we’d rather not pay what we don’t have to, but we’d also rather not get
sued.
Thanks for your help.
