From the Globe and Mail Letters, Oct. 18, 2010: The caption accompanying your photograph of a giant drilling machine that completed the world's longest tunnel beneath the Swiss Alps (In Brief - Oct. 16) informs us: "First conceived in 1947, some 2,500 workers have spent nearly 20 years smashing through rock." It's good to know that all those hard-working baby boomers can now look forward to their well-earned retirement. - Dave Duncan, Victoria (I'm impressed that they found 2,500 workers all exactly the same age to work on this project. At least they'd all agree on what music to play while rock-smashing.)
