It's great that work of Betsy, Paul, and Eric got the grant!
The purchase and installation of the destroyed head in front of #41 in 2020
cost the Association $4000. Fortunately, we had the damager of the fixture on
tape and were reimbursed.
Currently, four poles are without heads on Mattoon Street. That's $16,000 for
four new heads.
Three or four other heads are not working. It may be a simple matter of a new
bulb, but it could be a mechanical issue. Parts for these 45-year old fixtures
don't seem to be available, so replacement may be the only option.
Folks should report nonworking lights to Eversource. It is its responsibility
to replace the bulbs. Anything else falls to the Association.

I think I would prefer you buy shades rather than have us walk the unsafe
darkness these lights provide now. The lights now are too dark and allow too
much trouble to get away with things in the dark. I'm for brighter ones and
safety. Get some curtains, or don't complain about crime in the neighborhood,
or drug deals going on on your front steps, or prostitution happening under
your steps because you want a dark street.
Sorry, but I'm sick of these same idiots lurking in the shadows on the street.
They know it's dark and they can get away with it. We're spending $28,000 to
improve security and you want the street lights dimmed. Too many of our
neighbors have left in fear of their safety.

Street so beautiful at night. Let's make sure we don't end up with those
hideous bright-white strip mall lights that the city put up on Elliot Street

When will the demolition be taking place?: Permitting and mobilization have
been occurring over the last 1 ½ months. Establishing a project perimeter
(barriers), utility disconnection, elevator decommissioning and removal of
equipment within the garage has been the focus for few weeks.
Does this mean the garage will be demolished in the next week?: NO over the
next 2 weeks signage is being installed (there was a slight delay in the
contractor receiving the physical signs. The signage plan was approved by the
City), fencing to be installed above barrier, scrim will be attached to the
fence, working with the City and Eversource to disconnect all remaining
utilities. Until these items are complete, we cannot be 100% certain when
structure demolition can occur but in order to stay on schedule, we do hope
demolition begins at some point in mid August.
Will there be an implosion or piece by piece?- NO IMPLOSION. The garage will
be taken down in pieces starting on the Harrison side of our property and
moving towards the Bruce Landon Way side of the property. Implosion would not
be the appropriate solution in this urban setting. The garage demolition was
designed by licensed engineers who specialize in this type of work. The work
is being performed by a contractor with years of experience of performing
this type of work.
Dust Control?: Yes, dust control is required scope of this project. The dust
control plans have been approved by project engineers. The engineers who
approve this work across the street from our site so I can assure you,
they’ll have close eyes on this.
Will there be security?- The contractor owns security of the job site as part
of their contract. The MCCA has public safety staff that oversee all our
properties. Could you clarify your question regarding security? There is also
an approved Safety procedure for this project but I am not sure if that is
what you’re asking about.
Concern regarding signage: as mentioned above, signage is being installed
over the next week. We apologize for the delay. We have been pushing the
contractor for this but they were waiting on their supplier to ship them.
We would be happy to discuss this project in more detail. As I’m sure
you’re aware, this garage is many years overdue for demolition. I think
we’ll all be happier to see this garage come down (safely) and have a new
and safe facility in its place. We are currently in the process of
establishing a project website which will show additional project updates as
they become available. During this meeting we can also discuss communication
paths moving forward.
Thanks,
Tara

Shannon – I told Tara that I would reach out to Betsy regarding the high
level concept design components of the garage project when she sent an email
to MCCA regarding the project way back in April. Those issues were discussed
with the neighborhood this past spring, as part of a neighborhood meeting
regarding an amendment to the Court Square Urban Renewal Plan. I did not
convey to Tara or anyone at MCCA that the City or my division would serve as
the neighborhood communication liaison for the garage project and I am fairly
certain that no other city department did either, as this is not a city
project and we do not have the requisite project details to assume such a
role. I am unclear what the basis is of MCCA’s impression that the City
was coordinating neighborhood outreach and ongoing communication regarding
the project.

Reconstruction - DEMOLITION
So PLEASE let me know exactly when the demolition will be taking place —
all the barriers are now in place. Does this mean it will be happening like
next week??
Will there be an implosion or piece by piece? DUST control?? Will there be
security while it is happening?
Also, it is disconcerting that there is NO signage regarding pedestrian
crossing or accommodation for pedestrians around the site.
These were only some of the questions that came up at the recent neighborhood
meeting.

Hi Betsy,
My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, we have been coordinating
with the city on this project, and we were under the impression that they
would be reaching out to you directly, and unfortunately it does not seem
like that was the case.
We are still working on the design details of the actual garage, but I have
copied in our capital projects team on this email, as they would be able to
give you a more accurate update. We are happy to set up some time to discuss
this with you, and any other groups that you think would benefit from an
