Department of Natural Resources
Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)
|
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Weatherization Assistance Program
(WAP) is critical to meeting the heating and cooling needs of Missourians with
low-incomes, especially households with seniors, people with disabilities and
children. Families use energy year round and energy conservation services can
help ease the burden on the pocketbook.
WAP makes homes more energy efficient, safer and healthier. Properly insulating
and sealing air leaks can help many homes save as much as 30%. Home
weatherization not only saves homeowners money, it leaves them with a more
comfortable living space and also reduces the pollution associated with
generating energy used for heating and cooling. WAP returns $2.78 in
health-and-safety related benefits for every $1 invested.
To apply for assistance, clients must contact their local weatherization agency
and complete appropriate application forms, including income documentation, to
verify eligibility. Eligibility for WAP is based on the household’s size and
total income. A single person with a maximum income of $27,180 is eligible and
a household with two residents can have a maximum income of $36,620 to qualify.
Each additional member of the household can have a maximum income of $9,440.
Once a client is verified as eligible, an auditor from the agency will conduct
an energy audit of the home to determine what suitable measures will produce
the greatest energy savings. The agency crew or contractor will then install
the energy-efficiency measures on the home. Upon completion, a certified
quality control inspector will examine the home to ensure the quality of the
installation and completeness of the work.
Weatherization leads to significant health benefits. Read the @ENERGY "Home Rx"
report available at bit.ly/2iUEQ59. After weatherization, residents with asthma
reported fewer hospitalizations and emergency room visits, families'
out-of-pocket medical expenses decreased by an average of $514 (according to
@ORNL), and children missed fewer school days.

Resources’ Weatherization webpage at dnr.mo.gov/energy/weatherization or
contact the Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Energy at 855-522-2796.
