Yes, you do get an alert when there's an update, but when you get that update depends on how you have software update set up in system preferences. I did a software update just a couple of days ago, but since I have my updates set up for weekly, I wouldn't have gotten the alert for the iTunes update for several days yet. I suppose if you want to be immediately on top of every update, you would set the update check for daily.
