Being dropped into the applications folder is just fine, it just means you've closed a program, and have been put at the next active window (in this case the finder) There's nothing wrong with your memory or executing of programs, it's just how the system works. Windows does the same thing, when you alt-f4 a program, it drops you back to the next active window, which sometimes is the desktop.
Nothing to be concerned about.
