try pressing command-f5 to turn vo off and then command-f5 to turn it back
on again.

I probably don't know what I'm talking about. I think I heard it say vo
cursor on. It is talking in a lower voice, which made me think that I was
using a different cursor. (I guess the vo cursor isn't like the jaws
cursor?) Alex's low voice persists, even when I deleted my voiceover
preferences. I will try repair permissions.

what do you mean when you say the vo cursor is still on?

Unfortunately, that didn't have an impact. the vo cursor is still on
(what's the command to turn it off?) and things are still happening
all on their own. launchpad keeps coming up, for example. this is a
big problem.
