This is one of the major problems I have with VO's interface. It's not consistent when one should interact and when one doesn't need to. For example, when I read mail in the preview pane, I don't interact with the messages table. I could, however, interact with it and receive information bout my mail in a different format. On the desktop, it's not necessary to interact when choosing a volume, as you've found out. However, it is possible. For the moment, it's really a matter of trial and error, and there seems to be et rules around when it's beneficial. This may be looked at as one of those "more than one way to depilate a feline," situations, rather than a "yo MUST do it this way!" sorta of scenario.
