You can also use VO A to hear the progress of the download.

If you are downloading something farily large so that you can ue vo to look at the progress of the download, you can cause it to tick instead of babble.

here's how:
1> open vo utility with either vo-f8 or from applications/utilities.
2> in the verbosity pane, choose announcements tab.
3> uncheck the "speak when status text changes" checkbox.

Now, when you focus on a download status vo will tick.
