no need to be sorry but the procedures are different for copying text from mail in leopard and snow leopard.
in leopard, interact with your message, find where you want to start selecting text, press vo-enter to begin selecting, move to the end of your selection and press vo-enter to end the selection. then, copy and paste as normal.
