to get recording to work, you have to change the audio driver in garage
band. to do this:
1> open the gb preffs;
2> click the audio/midi button;
3> find input and change it from default to built-in microphone. Youwill
be asked if you want to change the audio driver and you answer yes.
press command-w to close the window and then you can use your microphone
to record.

Also you haven't gotten the loop browser to work and have music in your
