Hi Nicole & all, I think you need Lion to be able to use iCloud on your Mac, but this shouldn't stop you from updating your iPhone to IOS 5... just plug your iPhone into your Mac and when iTunes opens, select your iPhone from the sources list, choose the "summary" option, I think, and VO right arrow and you should come to an "Update" button.
