Hi, Dean,

I've been catching up on my mail and just saw this.  I'm astonished that nobody 
else has responded.  Here's the answer you're looking for...

There is a keystroke for checking the text attributes.  It is control-option-T.

It, and many other commands, can be found in the voiceover commands menu, 
control-h-h from the finder.
