[macvoiceover] System voice lagging severely

I've noticed that, if I use the system voice to announce incoming messages in
an IM client (several, in my case), while Voiceover is also running, under
Mountain Lion with the latest updates, that the system voice will store
announcements and speak them later. This doesn't happen with status changes,
say, for instance, "Mark BurningHawk went off line," but instead will happen
mostly with text messages. When the voice is allowed to catch up, it will
start by reading yesterday's chat messages, working its way up to the present
unless interrupted. Is there a way to shrink the buffer on this or something?
Thanks. :)
