One caution, apparently my machine was muted, or perhaps I inadvertently
activated a mute function. Regardless, Eileen hit the a key and suddenly it was
chattering away.

All you need to do to set up any new Mac is to turn it on and wait until you
hear a voice telling you what to do.

If this is the first run of the machine you will be prompted whether you
want vO assistance.
If this does not happen you should be able to open VO with cmd f5 after a

Home from the local Apple store with a new Macbook Air. Apparently I
managed to do damage with liquid to the IO interface, that's where the
power cord and one USB run through, as well as the logic board and the
SSD. Yay me.
I of course said I would be fine setting things up at home because I was
in a bit of a rush. I do have some sighted assistance, but is it actually
something I can accomplish myself? At what point can I put Voiceover on,
and how do I do it?
Thanks,
