Maybe a long shot, under keyboard preferences have you set the key repeat rate
too short ?

experiencing stuttering speech. This happens randomly, and I have not found a
way to reproduce it. I thought at first that it might’ve only happened when
VoiceOver read for a somewhat extended period of time, such as a blog or forum
post. However, it has also been happening while I type. Fortunately this
doesn’t seem to occur most of the time, but I’m wondering if any of you have
found a fix for it. It happens with every voice I’ve tried, including the
compact ones. It’s been happening for a couple months. Any help greatly
appreciated.
