I plugged in external speakers that go through the headphones plug, but I
agree with you, mostly software issues can reset themselves with a restart,
definitely thinking a job for the geniuses at apple. just hope it's not too
serious. my USB headset has taken to unplugging itself recently saying its
drawing too much power so who knows. I'll update you guys when I know more, but
thanks David, I really think I have tried everything lol within my
capabilities. :)

I don't see the beginning of this thread here, but have you plugged in a
headset? sometimes, this can magically fix issues like this. it is most
likely a hardware issue though since resetting the pram didn't fix it.

yes, although if it's not a OS issue, then it could be a hardware. in which
case I would not be able to reinstall the OS without voice over. so giving up,
as much as I hate to admit it and taking the beauty to the apple
hospital/store. lol.
thanks for everyone's help. I will update you all when I know more.
thanks again. You guys rock. unfortunately no cookies today lol :(

      Hi,
In the worst of cases, remember you can reinstall the OS from the install
DVD, without erasing your home folder with your documents etc. This would most
likely solve the issue.

        Hello MJ and all:

Have you checked the sound effects tab in sounds which can be found in
System preferences?

Is the slider all the way up to 100%? What is the device in the pop up
menus set to?

yeah, several times. and also did a pram reset. I really have done
everything I could possibly think of. it's baffled me. like some sounds work,
like the email alerts but none of the others. like syrinx alert sounds, voice
over, and the skype call got muted. I really am stumped.

            Hello MJ and all:

Have you attempted to restart your machine to see if the sounds
return?

yeah I did that, several times during that process. but I know
its more than vo just getting knocked off with the skype sound being lost and
the syrinx sound not being heard.
              it's a mystery.

Have you tried toggling VoiceOver back on with command F5 or
function command F5?
