One of the issues is having a GPS receiver connected to your Macbook. Before
the arrival of smart phones with GPS chips there were USB receivers for this
exact purpose, and apps that took advantage of the memory and processing power
of a computer. Doing a little investigoogling, it looks like USB GPS receivers
are stillout there and well regarded by those who need a little more precision,
and by people needing GPS data for higher level processing needing a computer.
Looks like the basic versions run between $30 and $50 on Canadian Amazon,
considerable less thatn when I was looking back in 1999, and a lot less than a
Trekkercost back in 2011.
As far as what app to use once you’ve got a GPS receiver tied into your
Macbook, everything I’m finding is for IOS, it looks like Apple Maps itself has
map download capabilities, but it really wants you to be on line.
In the app store it looks like there a few options, mostly paid apps.
Hope this helps, there are definitely options, hope you find the one that is
right for you.

Hi all
I know there are apps for the blind like BlindSquare. But is there something
for Mac OS as well? I prefer to use my MacBook Pro in the car because I don’t
have to fiddle with a touch screen on a bumpy road and because of the battery
life. It would be cool to work on things and have the GPS app telling me
where I am passing with the car.
Thanks
Ben
