I found voiceover more responsive without the sounds. You might also want to uncheck "enable possisional audio" checkbox to speed it up a bit more. this willl stop voiceover trying to play the sounds even though they are muted.

Hi folks,Some weeks ago, I went in to Voiceover prefs in to sounds and checked the box that says mute sounds". At first I felt a little lost with out the sounds, but, then I began to really like the new way of listening to Voiceover. The sounds are very nice, but, not having them is a quiet change. Just thought I would run it by you folks. At least for me, a change is nice in the dead of winter.
