Hello Suzanne:
That is not a stupid question especially if you have never done it before.
If you hold the phone above the homePod with either of the cameras pointing
down towards the top of the homePod … it ought to work. basically, the apple
magic occurs if you hold the phone in the vicinity of the homePod … I just made
the above suggestion for orientation purposes.
Do not hold it against the homePod however you do it … give it a little bit of
space. the phone ought to vibrate and them indicate it is performing its magic
:).
Please let us know if this information proves useful.

Hello,
I have a stupid question. I decided to get a second home pod so that I can
have stereo. I went into the Home app, ad accessory, and it said to put
iPhone near the device. Should it be on top of the Home pod? Should the
back facing camera be on top of the Home Pod? I’m not sure what to do, and I
am not getting any voiceover cues from the HomePod itself.
Thanks.
