I finally got that to work but my passwords have all disappeared. They are on
my backup drive but I can't transfer them and I can't use superduper to do a
reverse backup unless I resize the partition on my backup because that drive is
4tb while the one I am working from is 3tb. Also, my "security agent has no
windows" woes continue and I can't get the update of the Ace extra from
rogueamoeba to install; the "security agent has no windows" comes up and
airfoil or audio hijack or whichever app I am trying to do the extras install
from goes busy. I think I am going to take one of my other external drives and
do an completely clean install to see how much of this is something wrong on my
installation and how much is just plain Apple. Oh yeah, also when I try to copy
a secret from keychain access, that goes busy and - you guessed it ! -
"security agent has no windows".
Btw here's a tip for quitting applications. Instead of using cmd-option-escape,
which eventually quits an application but then leaves its window open so you
have to go into the window chooser to find and close it, go directly to the
offending application on your dock, do vo-shift-m and go down to quit and do
vo-space on it. The application should actually quit with no stupid window left
open - novel idea!
I know some people's macs are still running beautifully; maybe the fact that
mine is a 2012 or that I am using external drives because my internal one quit
long ago explain some of it. But the problems with macs are not just
accessibility issues. Here's a quote from a podcast, not primarily on the
subject of computers at all, James White from Alpha and Omega ministries. This
isn't his exact quote but it's what I remember him saying recently and I think
I basically have the quote right:
"I switched from Windows to Mac in 2008 because it just worked. ... Now Apple
has gone the way of Microsoft and it no longer 'just works'". Sorry to say I
share his sentiments. But I don't see anything better out there so on we go,
trying to solve the problems and track down the glitches. Apple ought to be
paying me for the stuff I have to troubleshoot, solve or work around! Well,
maybe that is a slight exaggeration but you get the idea. Not just being
negative; obviously I get a lot of benefit from my Mac or it would be on the
scrap heap but some of this nonsense is frustrating.
