The solution I found doesn't use voiceover so I'll be brief--well, actually it can use voiceover but only as related to using voiceover in the terminal. I discovered that emacs has a calculator program. More importantly, it has a quick calc which allows one to do computations and get results and then to paste them into the current file. The file window is still visible when using quick calculator so I can use braille to review both the file and my calculations.
