I had a 2011 Macbook Air, the one that came out with the release of Lion, and
it was working just fine up until I dumped a cup of coffee on it in February.
4.5 years, including being just fine after falling off a speaker on a stand to
a concrete pool deck, maybe 6.5 feet. Crunched the corner of the monitor so it
didn’t close right, one of the reasons the cup of coffee was able to hit all
the vital parts when I put it in my briefcase with the travel lid off. Stop
laughing.
I was lucky that work covered my new unit, got the exact same 11 inch model. I
would think that if it came with a warranty you could get away with a 2012
Macbook Air. Warranty wouldn’t have to be too lengthy, just long enough to make
sure anything isn’t seriously messed up.
One thing to watch out for is the power cords, they’re proprietary and pricey,
and I went through 3 of them in 4 years. The newer MagSafe 2 dont’ seem all
that different, but theyconnector casing problem those 3 cords had manifested
itself in a shorter time than I’ve had my newer one. Not sure if that made
sense, but my first cord from 2011 had the casing peel apart at the computer
end after about 6 months, and two more had the same thing happen in about the
same time period. The fourth one didn’t get to that point before the computer
died.
Good luck, and just think, you’ll be all cool and hip the next time you’re on
your Macbook Air when you’re out and about.

I would like to get a laptop to go with my iMac: not absolutely necessary
but would be a good idea. For one thing I am going to take my iMac into Best
Buy because the internal drive hasn't been working right for quite some time
(not completely dead but input/output errors after I put anything on it).
This has reminded me of how wise it is to have a backup system; I have
external drives which are what I am using anyway because onf the internal
drive problem; if i had a laptop I could just plug one of those in or use
the system on the internal drive.
Anyway, I really can't afford to buy a brand new laptop right now;
technically there are ways I could do it but it wouldn't be the wisest path
to follow. So I looked on Apple and some other websites and Gazelle. I could
get a certified refurbished Macbook or Macbook Air quite inexpensively if I
am willing to go back a few years: 2012 is probably the earliest I would
really consider. If this is dramatically less expensive, do some of you
think this would be okay or would be unwise. I had a 2005 mac mini running
Leopard and a 2008 mini running Lion until they both completely died
recently about within a week of each other so I know that Macs actually tend
to last quite a while. I realize an earlier Macbook is going to become
uunupgradable sooner than a new one and my iMac itself is a late 2012 but
for the possible prices even three or four years I think could make it
worthwhile. I just wanted some advice so if anybody thinks I would be
throwing away my money I would just as soon hear it straight out. I'm kind
of thinking of one of those 11 inch macbook airs that has been bumped from
the lineup but am going to look at the other macbooks before I decide. Any
advice or opinions?
