All,

— I promised a review of iOS7 after a week or so, and now that time has come
but I’m not yet finished. This operating system has a lot to offer and I want
to be interesting, fun and fair in my reporting of my assessment.

— I have a surprise for you as well. One of the reasons for a bit of tardiness
is that I also have an iPhone 5s to review as well so we’ll cover both in this
review.

I’m reporting iOS7 on my iPod touch 5.
and a space gray iPhone 64GB 5s.

— If you have not yet made either move and you are the least bit trepedacious
about it, don’t…. Watch the list and other resources for
moves toward lessening trepidation.

— I’m overall thrilled with iOS7 and iPhone 5s even though I’m facing an issue
which — I hope to have resolved soon with the voiceover volume control in the
rotor on the 5s. This issue is fairly widely known and apple are hopefully
working on a fix.

— When I move around the iPhone or my iPod touch, I discover that they both
seem to be a bit jumpy although turning reduced motion on on the 5s seems to
mitigate this a bit.

— There are a couple of twists in touch typing now. Often, when typing, i’ll
be presented with an alternate character picker which may well be due to screen
sensitivity and at times while typing again using touch typing, I begin hearing
the word select as I traverse the keyboard.

That in a nutshell is my review although I’ve a good deal more to share which
some might find interesting so if you don’t want to read a long detailed report
on the events and experiences leading up to the above conclusions, stopping
here will not only provide you with what you need to make a current decision
but also spare you from what is to come.
The adventure:

— iOS 7 was acquired late on the 18th and placed onto an iPhone4s and an iPod
touch 5 both 64GB and both less than a month old.

— The screen interaction issues were observed soon after the updates were
installed.

— The 4s was just sluggish enough to push us over the edge since we were close
anyway, towards getting 5esses.

We set out bright and early on the morning of the launch and arrived at the
apple store shortly before 9. We were given our cards thus affirming our
places in line. The line moved fairly quickly and before we knew it, we were
some ways in back of it. An apple store employee moved us inside and our
position in the cue was held till it was our turn in line. Boy, what a racket
but also, what a difference from two years ago when the 4s was launched. I
think the crowd was even bigger.

We were told when filling in our cards that only "space gray" was available and
decided we’d not mind that all things considered. Our turn to be served came
quickly enough and we got phones and cases.

Beginning the transfer from 4s to 5s was fairly straightforward and typical of
say setting up a phone as new or even restoring from an earlier backup. (We
traded our phones in). As our business as concluded after the initial setup,
as is my want I decided to lock my phone so that I could stow it in my pocket.
It would not lock. After a bit, this was determined to be you guessed it, a
hardware issue so I was given a new phone but not so fast. There was a bit of
trouble in that for some reason, my att info was not being transferred to the
new phone. This was eventually sorted and just before noon, we were on our way.

Things I love about iOS7:

— iTunes radio is awesome!

— I love the new VO gestures.

— I am pleased at the way the app switcher and the control center gestures work
as well as the new spotlight search gesture and others.

— When you begin working with the 5s, you’ll notice right away that the home
button is just a bit larger than that of the other devices and that is due to
the ring around it for helping with the touch id feature.

— I set up the touch id on friday night, went to bed, and found when I woke and
attempted to use my fingerprint to unlock the phone, it was not happening. I
relate this so that you will know what to do in the event this happens to you.
Restore the phone. To do this, now, you must turn off find my iPhone if it is
in use.

— Even the 5s is somewhat slow to respond to requests for activity which
surprised me. I did turn on reduced motion which seems to have helped.

to a second iPhone?

— The story should end here, but I discovered a bug I’d not seen mentioned
anywhere on Wednesday the 25th which was startling and I was surprised that I’d
over looked it till
then. The voiceover volume in the rotor does not adjust upward above %35.

— A case on this was established with apple and an appointment to visit the
apple store was eventually made for Friday the 27th. The phone was swapped out
to no avail. Further research just prior to the return to the apple store
revealed at least one other person having this issue.

— So, as you can see, the store is not yet complete even after three iPhones.
I’m waiting on some information from apple support staff who are reviewing this
issue. I’ll bring this information to the list as soon as I am able.

This review/summation is written in hope that someone will be helped by its
contents.

Explanation of omissions:
The specifications of the new iOS and the new devices are available on the
apple web and the list of bugs is widely published. This report is
observational only and a bit beyond that in order to provide full and unique
information.

We are all served best when we work together to move toward a better
technological community.

Any errors or misstatements in this missive are solely the responsibility of
the author who would be flattered if you’d join him in uncovering yet more
interesting facts about the current crop of new apples. No oranges please
though, too much acid.
