Thanks Scott. Yes, if things aren’t going to come to a crawl with my computer
because I can’t afford a new one right now. :)
I would really appreciate a step by step on how to do this. Then, if I don’t
make a mess of it all, I’ll be grateful that I learned how to do it and won’t
be so afraid to upgrade in the future.
I did check that my computer is compatible because the Mac Book Pro goes back
to the 2010 time frame so hopefully that means it won’t slow it down too much.
Thanks so much.

Barbra, if this is something you’d like to do I’d be happy to post a step by
step. I think it’s been done here as well before you might search the
archives. As said though it’s super easy.

Thanks Sarah. I’m not sure I know how to do any of that! :) I’ve never been
tech savvy.

Somewhere on apple's site is a list of supported macs that should be able
to run sierra. You should be fine, it might be a bit slow, but you should
be fine. I would do the clean install to make sure that all sectors are
filled with out any empty spaces inbetween. I find this helps when you have
older computers. I then migrate from time machine my set up I had with
mavericks or what ever I was running before.

Thanks John. that did work so my computer is now backed up.
I’m wondering if it is possible for me to update to Sierra. I am using
Mavericks and my Mac Book Pro processor is 2.3 GHC Intelcore I5 and
memory of 4gb Mhz 1333 ddr3 if that helps anyone to be able to tell me.
I don’t know where to look to see how much space I’ve used and my computer
is an early 2011 version.
Thanks so much.
