Mary Ellen,
Here is a link that talks about enabling sounds in Windows on start up.

If you wish to discuss this further, please contact me off list at:
rmaccoux@xxxxxxxxx as this is not a mailing list for Windows.

Subject: [mac4theblind] Startup sounds on the Mac:
I am of 2 minds about this. Sometimes I think having sounds makes us stand
out but at other times I welcome a prompt or a sound to know where I am.
Now had they allowed thee startup sound to be picked up when you plug or
connect a headset they may have had something, but since it seemed to stand
out there all on its own and was rather harsh to my way of thinking, I can
see both sides of this problem.
My solution is to have Voiceover permanently set to on and I have no doubt
when my computer is on because I get a message from Voiceover.
There is also no startup sound on the latest Windows computer. I bought a
new Pc a couple of weeks ago and the first message I get is to log on.
Thanks for reading.
