Woops, no you cannot mute just system sounds, unless you switch to a
different input and route voiceover to your sound card, maybe? I'm actually
not sure.

Um, unless something has changed, FN+F10 mutes everything including
Voiceover. The original poster wanted to know if they could mute sounds and
not Voiceover. To that person, what sounds do you want to mute, Voiceover
sounds or system sounds? To mute Voiceover sounds, go to the Voiceover
Utility with VO+F8 and interact with the utility categories. Go down to
sounds. Stop interacting and VO+Right. The first option is to mute sound
effects. As for system sounds, I'm not sure if you can mute those.
