Ok, these activities are still several lessons ahead but I'd like to have
something to fall back on while I search for keyboard methods to get tasks

Like she said it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, rather depending on
the kind of drag/drop that you want to do. But if that doesn't work, another
alternative that you have is to position the mouse over the item, press vo
space shift to lock the mouse button down, then navigate to where you want
to drag it, and press vo shift space again. You can maybe make this move
more smoothly if after pressing the mouse down, you turn off cursor tracking
(vo shift f3) so that the cursor won't be so sluggish when moving to the
target. 

Keep in mind that for drag and drop to work, both items have to be visible
on your screen. Moving windows might sometimes help: VO grave to turn on
move window mode, arrow keys to move the window, escape to shut off that
mode.
