A couple of days ago I announced Libre-OS, an OS for IoT with LuaJIT VM.
Since then several people raised questions about using word “Libre” with a
proprietary OS.
I would like to take a chance to clarify from technical point of view.
Libre-OS is all about liberty. The sole purpose of Libre-OS is to give
users total control over their IoT devices, identity and data. The sole
purpose of our network service is to help user locate their Libre Hub in
order to create end-to-end encrypted connection.
So it may not be “Free as in Beer” type of free. But it certainly is “Free
from being manipulated or exploited” type of free. In contrast, Fackbook
can boast of being free as in beer, while we all know the rest.
I found LuaJIT is the most suitable VM for my OS. Libre-OS benefited a lot
from the effort of the community. Words can’t express how much I appreciate
your efforts.
Libre-OS is an open platform. Any user can develop any App with built-in
web based IDE, and share it with the whole world.
Apart from secure connectivity and highly abstract API, Libre-OS gives user
the ability to create arbitrarily complex process with optimal GUI on their
smartphone, without any programming. For example, blinking two lights with
user defined pattern, which, believe or not, only Libre-OS can do without
forcing users do programming.
We would like to make every effort to promote more intelligent algorithms
for devices such as thermostats or sprinkler controllers.
I will be happy to give away kits of complete set of devices to some active
Lua developers, as soon as we go into mass production, with no string
attached. My goal is, and always is, building a sustainable IoT system for
a sustainable society.
