Hi LPTV Loopers,
I talked to Sling TV's VP of Programming and Strategy on MLK Day. I was asking
about the local TV lineup for their streaming packages. This would be local TV
stations that they stream rather than integrating the ability to also receive
OTA signals. He told me that they only carry Fox and NBC stations, because
they must for the other content they air. They aren't interested in carrying
other TV stations. I was hoping they would carry my ministry's full power TV
station. I am hoping that vMVPDs will eventually fall under the MVPD rules.
However, Sling TV just has a couple facilities with their main integration
point being in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I suppose this doesn't affect LPTV much
except that people who have Sling TV would also want to have over-the-air
antenna TV to receive the local channels. It doesn't seem like the vMVPDs want
to carry local channels much. AT&T TV doesn't want to carry local TV stations
except for the big network stations. They said that they will revisit this
every year or two. The only bigger streaming solution that seemed to care much
about LPTV was Locast.org. They added KQSL. They also carry LPTV stations.
They pick up KQSL via KQTA-LD. I'm still waiting on Google TV and other vMVPDs
to get back to me.
Blessings,
Keith

Well that's very encouraging to read about Sling. I did not know that. Have you
seen the interface? Are the OTA channels listed alongside the streaming
channels in the Sling channel guide?

One would presume viewers would still want to get their local stations carrying
the major national networks, so for LPTV You Tube is no good since LPTVs aren't
streamed on it, however Sling is good for LPTV since to watch major networks
"Air TV," comes bundled with an antenna and they have LPTVs in their online
channel list.

Is it really good news? I would imagine most of these folks are simply going
from cable to a streaming provider like YouTube TV or Sling.
