After 9/11, the US began patrolling the airspace over N. America. There had
been all of 14 planes--unarmed--on alert patrol, until then, although the US
had patrols monitoring air activity on other continents. But not on home
turf!

This bit of info courtesy of John Hockenberry (ABC-News Dateline), conveyed
in a lecture this evening. It seems that this issue of America's pre-9/11
preparedness, or lack thereof, is on the pre-election media agenda. Seems
the US has been spending billions on fancy security systems, but just didn't
lock the damned door.

(Note to googlers: See "NORAD" and an unclassified pdf doc.)
