I used to work at a translation company. There were something like two hundred of us in the building and the result was that any piece of writing visible in the building - warnings on the elevator, signs, cafeteria menus - were full of little red notes. I suppose that professional writers consider the general sloppiness evident in everyday writing as something of an insult to their profession. I know they took even the most mundane coffee machine manual translations very seriously, and often the translations were of considerably higher quality than the originals.
