"More than 20 years ago, Jimmy Carter spoke of a "malaise," a failure
of the American spirit, and he was berated for pointing out the the
nation had lost both its nerve and its verve for compassion and
excellence. We had become fat, dumb and happy. For the past six years
we've become fat, dumb and terrified. Of all of the casualties of the
past six years, it's the loss of activism, the loss of the obligation
to make things better for all of us that is the most difficult to
swallow."
