the chickens were not conforming
at dusk instead of heading for the coop
they sat down on the ground
like peace marchers
laboring under the mistaken impression that they had a right to roost
right there
i arrested five
latched them in
but the biggest and the smallest took scared refuge
where my long arm could not reach
i called Mac the border collie over
away to me
i shouted
which means
kindly run counterclockwise
around these transgressors
and drive them to me
you've seen the movie
and what was his response
he gave me a stare
incredulous you would call it
questioning
the fowl must be getting to you
he seemed to say
the bloody run's

even with sick leave and vacation taken together
who today who has time for forty days and forty nights in the sand
which as eddie izzard points out

in hope of having a word with god
of course there's also the problem of

are expanding their vocabulary
