Just read Lawrence's query about Mike Geary. Can't answer that one. As for
myself, life has taken an interesting twist. I am reminded of the bit in, I
dimly recall, *Tom Sawyer*, about painting a fence, which is work when you
have to do it, play when it isn't.
At seventy-two, I thought my teaching days were over. Then, this spring
Ruth and I used the excuse of an annual meeting of the International Union
of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) to visit Dubrovnik, a
place highly recommended by our Marine Corps pilot son-in-law who stops
there when flying aircraft to and from the Middle East. There we ran into
an old friend Shu-min Huang. Shu-min had no sooner retired from his former
position as Director of the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, in
Taipei than he was snapped up to head the Institute of Anthropology at
National Tsinghua University (not the famous one in Beijing, its avatar in
Taiwan). Shu-min is making arrangements for me to spend February-June as a
visiting professor, teaching courses on Methodology and Business
Anthropology. Since my field research in Taiwan was our introduction to
Asia, way back in 1969-71, and, free of career pressures, I will be free to
teach whatever I like, I am looking forward to another unexpected skew in
the path my life has taken.
