My first and simple reaction is that writing about people feeling or being miserable is too easy. Happiness is much harder. There's something smug about calling other people "champagne idiots." What's the difference between me liking champagne and others being idiots about it? Quantity? Persistence? Accompanying attitude? On another day, I know I would react differently.
