T. Browne:

"But it is the corruption that I fear within me, not the contagion of
commerce34 without me. 'Tis that unruly regiment35 within me, that will
destroy me;
'tis I that do infect my self; the man without a Navel36 yet lives in me; I
feel that original canker corrode and devour me; and therefore Defenda me
Dios de me, "Lord deliver me from my self,"".

Pretty pathetic. I wouldn't think a navel could be of such importance. More
references, below.

I thought the main reasons Adam _is_ painted as having a navel were
'aesthetic', to avoid to plain of an abdomen. It's not clear Eve had a navel,
either.

Cheers,

JL

The arguments of Pre, Mid, and Post-Umbilisists are rich in theory and for
the most part, lack any original fact.

as Browne in 1646 in Chapter V of his
Pseudoxia Epidemica, in which he criticised the be-belly buttoned Adams and
Eves  Michelangelo
