If thinking is what distinguishes man's
nature, then surely the essence of this nature, namely the
nature of thinking, can be seen only by looking away
from thinking. (Martin Heidegger) -->
Interesting that Heidegger had foresight to produce a quotation apposite to
Trump and the current media. But does thinking really distinguish man's nature
(creatures with a different nature could surely also be "thinking")? Only if we
mean by "thinking" not thinking in general terms but the kind of "thinking"
specific to those with "man's nature". So H seems to say thinking of a type
typical of "man's nature" defines "man's nature", and then this nature is
defined by [ie. has the "essence" of] "the nature of [that same] thinking": so
this man-type "thinking" gives us "man's nature" and this man-type nature is
established by "the nature of (man-type] thinking". We might equally say the
nature of man's reality is given by the reality for man and that the reality
for man is established by the nature of man's reality - in fact, I feel a book
coming on.
Now back to H and his man-type "thinking" = man-type "nature. Are we now
trapped in a "thinking-nature" mind-warp? Let's have a think. No, suggests H,
because we can get the "nature of thinking" "only by looking away from
thinking". So where do we look?
H may have brilliant answer to where we look (ie. away from thinking to get the
nature of thinking), but what is it? Or is H, to use Popper's term, just an
"intellectual swindler"? The debate continues.

One lesson to be learned from the rise of Donald Trump is that the media
should not bind themselves blindly to whatever moves the needle.
