Fraternizing with the lower orders has always carried risks. As Tom Paine put
it, “Overlords hug you one minute and raise your taxes the next. What do they
take us for? Domestic fowl?” Prescient he was, Paine. There’s probably a line
or two in “Common Sense” about panic buying of chickens in times that trouble
men’s souls.
