Sherman's name has cropped up time and time again in the books I've read as the premier strategist of modern warfare.
I would, if I were recommending books, recommend E. L. Doctorow's novel, The March. It's often very funny, and sometimes very moving. Doctorow's Sherman is a fine, Shakespearean rogue, with a sharp military eye and a disdain for West Point airs and manners.
